The Origin Story of Lucky 13

It’s kinda like if you gave an Kat a cookie kinda story 🐭🍪

I figured it made sense to share how Lucky 13 came about. It all started back in mid-September when I realized that the following week would mark exactly 13 weeks left in 2026.

I love the number 13 so I got to brainstorming (aka daydreaming) about creating something to go along with that.

Then I was looking at the calendar for the rest of the year, examining what sort of dates/days were coming up and I saw that New Year’s Day is on a Friday. That got me curious, wondering of any other days/dates of note were on Friday during this 13 week period I was planning on. And that’s when I realized that the 13th of November is on a Friday!

Also, the 13th card in Tarot decks is the Death card which, in my understanding, isn’t actually about death or dying. It’s about how life throws us curve balls all the freakin’ time and the real magic is in learning how to pivot as needed when they come flying at us.

Curious, grace-filled pivots are powerful magic, even when we’re muttering f*ck under our breath.

None of us get through life without major pivoting required. But it’s how we navigate those changes and side-quests that really impacts how much joy and peace we get to experience along the way. It’s about the power of intention AND attention. It’s about acknowledging shit has gone sideways and it sucks and still knowing how to find the good things going on within the shitstorm – that’s the kind of magic I’m really stoked about.

So, yeah, Boom! Lucky 13 starting on Friday the 13th was an instantly done deal.

It was the perfect way to start something that focuses on how we make our own luck when life goes sideways. It’s just such an absolutely perfect start date for this that I nearly couldn’t believe it was working out this way.

I quickly got deep into creating/planning mode. Got an outline for this 13-week end-of-year / new-year-same-wonderful-you kinda adventure. I was flowing with ideas for emails and weekly printables and deeper level materials for those that, like me, really thrive on the deep dives.

…and then this beloved, beleaguered chronically ill disabled body of mine hit this massive, gross brick wall and crash-boom–flair.

I found myself in one of the worst flairs I’ve yet to experience. I’m talking about having to use my wheelchair just to get to the bathroom, not being able to shower for 4 days, missing meals from lack of energy to even eat, insomnia for days-on-end kinda flair. It was so very much not a good time AND the chickadees returned which heralds autumn around here – magic amidst my shit-storm but still very much not a good time overall at all.

During one of those bouts of insomnia, I realized that 13 weeks of steady, ongoing engagement and connection wasn’t something I could promise you. Well, I guess I can promise anything, but this body was showing me there was no way I could depend on it to empower me to keep my word. And that’s how Lucky 13 evolved into a short, sweet 13-day experiment in noticing magic.

Whew!

That was one heck of an adventure to go through together, but now that I’ve arrived at what this offering is I cannot believe how delightful things are developing over here.

Did you know that there is usually at least one but sometimes multiple Friday the 13th’s each year?!? I’m thinking let’s have this adventure every time a Friday the 13th comes our way 🙂

You see, I’ve come to believe that we are both held within the constraints imposed by our bad luck AND that luck is something we make (especially in how we are able to choose to react/respond to the unexpected pivots) AND what we choose to pay attention to AND the intentions we set for our lives AND the stories we tell ourselves — all these things are part of the luck (i.e. magic) we get to make for ourselves.

I’m one lucky Kat… AND I exist within the lonely, painful limitations this body disabled by me/cfs & POTS actually have.

Both are true.

The magic, for me, happens when I’m able to choose to see things through a lens of gratitude and enchantment and curiosity for what is yet to come more often then through the lends of regret and grief over what has been and what can’t now be. Does that make any sense? I hope so.

I’d love for you to join me in this first round of Lucky 13!!!

We begin Friday, November 13th and wrap things up on Wednesday the 25th. Please consider joining us. 🙏🏻
